Hybrid Cloud: The Practical Middle Ground for Mauritian SMEs
IT Smart Box — 20/02/2026
"Cloud-first" became the default advice for a decade, and for many workloads it's still right. But for a growing number of Mauritian SMEs, a hybrid approach — some infrastructure on-premise, some in the cloud — is the more realistic and cost-effective answer.
Why pure cloud isn't always the answer
- Internet reliability and cost. A fully cloud-dependent office grinds to a halt during a connectivity outage. Local infrastructure for day-to-day operations keeps the business running regardless.
- Latency-sensitive workloads. Point-of-sale systems, local file servers, and some line-of-business applications simply perform better close to the user.
- Predictable cost at scale. Cloud costs that looked attractive at small scale can climb quickly as usage grows — owned infrastructure for stable, predictable workloads is often cheaper over 3-5 years.
Why pure on-premise isn't either
Email, collaboration (Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive), and disaster recovery are workloads where cloud platforms like Microsoft 365 genuinely outperform anything an SME could reasonably run itself — better uptime, better security tooling, and no hardware to maintain.
What a sensible hybrid split looks like
- Cloud: Email, collaboration, backup/disaster recovery, and anything that needs to be accessed securely from anywhere.
- On-premise: Core network infrastructure, local file/print services where latency matters, and any system with strict local data-handling requirements.
- Connected by design: VPN and VLAN segmentation so the two environments work as one secure network, not two separate risk surfaces.
How we approach it
We start with a workload-by-workload assessment — not a default recommendation — and build a migration plan that moves what makes sense to the cloud while keeping what makes sense local. That's infrastructure modernization done deliberately, not infrastructure modernization for its own sake.
